What is psychosexual therapy?
Psychosexual therapy is a specialised talking therapy for those who are experiencing sexual problems of a psychological nature. This treatment approach can be helpful to couples beginning or re-establishing a fulfilling sexual relationship.
Initially clients will be seen by the therapist for assessment sessions to discuss their presenting problems, personal and relationship histories and what their hopes are from therapy.
If it seems that there could be a physical or medical reason for your problem, therapists like myself from a non-medical background may recommend that you see a GP or another specialist for medical assessment before proceeding with a psychosexual therapy programme.
Therapy takes the form of a graded exposure behavioural programme tailored to your specific difficulties and needs. Clients are prescribed homework tasks - a series of relaxation, communication, sensual touching and sexual pleasuring exercises to be undertaken in the privacy of their own homes. Follow-up therapy sessions, generally on a weekly or fortnightly basis, provide the opportunity to discuss progress with the therapist.
