Sexual difficulties and dysfunctions

Many people will experience a sexual difficulty at some stage in their lives. This may be a one-off experience or a temporary problem which resolves itself, especially with understanding and good communication with a partner. When sexual difficulties persist they can be distressing for individuals and their partners and put strain on relationships.

The main sexual dysfunctions for men are:

  • Erectile Dysfunction - difficulty getting or maintaining an erection
  • Premature Ejaculation- difficulty controlling ejaculation which occurs too soon
  • Retarded Ejaculation - inability to ejaculate at all or taking too long to ejaculate
sexual dysfunctions for women

The main sexual dysfunctions for women are:

  •     Dyspareunia - difficult or painful sexual intercourse
  •  Vaginismus - involuntary spasm of the muscles around the vagina, making sexual intercourse impossible
  • Orgasmic Dysfunction - inability to experience orgasm

Other sexual dysfunctions include:


  •     Arousal difficulties
  •     Loss of libido
