Individual counselling and psychotherapy
People bring wide-ranging issues to counselling and psychotherapy. Generally people seek such help because they are not at peace with themselves, their relationships, working or social lives. Sometimes difficulty coping with an upsetting or traumatic event, past or present, or a crisis prompts referral.
While we can often benefit from talking things through with someone close to us, sometimes it is more beneficial to talk with an independent professional person. In counselling and psychotherapy clients have the opportunity to engage in a special, confiding, therapeutic and trusting relationship with their chosen helper. The relationship with the therapist is an important part of the process and so it is important to feel safe with the person.
Some people will be clear about the difficulties or issues they bring to therapy while others may not. Talking therapy offers the opportunity to explore, understand and work through troublesome personal issues at different levels. This can be a difficult process but will hopefully lead to greater wellbeing and in some cases also symptom relief.
Short-term counselling tends to be more focused, taking a problem-solving approach, while longer-term or more open-ended therapy allows more in depth exploration and working through of underlying issues and conflicts. I can offer short, medium or longer-term help depending on clients' needs. This can be discussed at the initial assessment and reviewed as we go along.
